Shutters Cottage in St Ives

General Information

We are very excited to have taken this cottage under our management, as we feel there is simply nothing like it in St Ives.  This is a proper old cottage with heaps of history, and evidence of a pilchard press on the ground floor, but it has been arranged to give a modern feel, and utilise all the space available.

Shutters is a unique hand finished cottage in the heart of Downalong, St Ives. Literally a stones throw from the sandy harbour beach and the restaurants, galleries, and boutique shopping in the town centre.

Shutters has an utterly unique layout with mezzanine kitchen and second living room reached by a handmade wooden staircase. The upper floor is accessed via a bespoke central staircase which spirals up into the charming two double bedrooms each with their own en-suite shower rooms.

The property is adorned throughout with unique handmade fixtures and fittings. Doors, staircases, bedroom tables, shelving, beds and balustrades all have a wonderful organic form, making the cottage one of the most interesting we have seen.

A further ground floor wet room and utility room is a useful addition.

Interesting features:

Many cottages in the downalong would have been able to press pilchards on the ground floor. At the height of the pilchard industry in the mid 19th Century, there were pilchard cellars all over St.Ives. The rectangular wall recesses in the living room of Shutters Cottage are designed to take one end of a pressing pole. The other end would be weighted, and between would be a 'hogshead' sized barrel with layers of pilchards and salt.

The window lintel in the kitchen extends either side into the neighbouring cottages, and is a ship's spar (probably of douglass fir or spruce). It was very common in St Ives to utilise timber from shipwrecked vessels.

Please note:

The spiral straircase which leads from the mezzanine to the top floor has quite small treads, and may not be suitable for small children or guests with restricted mobility.
